Governance indicators

DataGov provides an interface for accessing most of the publicly available indicators related to governance. The interactive tool permits users to  produce cross-national comparative and time series graphs and tables. It contains approximately 800 governance indicators for a global sample of countries whose coverage depends on the source. A key feature of the web tool is the information provided in respect to each indicator about the methodology used to build it and the implications this has for the indicator’s reliability, validity and suitability for making comparisons across countries and over time.

Datastream and Stata

Question: Is there a way to get my results from Datastream in a format that Stata can work with? The transpose option doesn’t do what I would like it to do. I would like Company name, Year and variables in columns.

Answer: Yes there is a way. You have to use a request table for this. You find this request table in the Datastream menu in the add in in Excel. For a manual on how to use a request table look elsewhere on this blog. I have added a example of a request table for Stata for the FTSE100 companies. You will have to enter each company code separately to first get all the years for company one and then all the years for company two etc. NOTE ! There is no way to get the company name in your results so you have to add them manually later in your results.

Have a close look at this example request table and try to program it for your personal purposes.

Global list of companies in Datastream

Question: I am trying to find a worldwide list of companies in Datastream that is not huge. The lists that I find either exclude a country, are divided into industries or are too large (5000+ companies). Is there a comprehensive global list?

Answer: You can use the DJ Stoxx 1800. This index consists of 1800 worldwide companies. You can either choose the one in dollars $ or the one in Euros E.
